Srinagar- Ahead of the anti-BJP opposition parties meeting scheduled to be held Friday in Patna, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday offered prayers at the cemetery of the last Emperor of Kashmir, Yusuf Shah Chak in Nalanda district of Bihar.
Yusuf Shah Chak was the last Muslim ruler of Independent Kashmir. He ruled Kashmir from 1579 AD and 1589 AD. Yousuf succeeded his father, Ali Shah Chak, who crowned Yousuf before he died. Yousuf defeated all the contenders for the throne, including his uncle Abdal Chak and ascended the throne in 1578.
He was exiled thousands of miles away in Bihar’s Nalanda district, when Mughal emperor Akbar annexed Kashmir in 1586 AD. He was also given land in Islampur block of Nalanda distinct, where he lies buried today.
The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir took to Twitter to express her displeasure over the condition of the cemetery.
“Paid obeisance at Yousuf Shah Chak’s grave in Bihar. As the last muslim ruler of Kashmir, his resting place symbolises the ties between Kashmir & Bihar. Unfortunately the site is in absolute disrepair & ruins. Appeal @NitishKumar ji to take steps to preserve this relic of history,” she tweeted.
