Srinagar- At least thirteen children were rescued during a raid from an ‘unregistered’ orphanage at Lawaypora area on the outskirts of Srinagar, following the death of an inmate under mysterious circumstances.
Police along with child rights organizations raided Al Muzammil Welfare Trust at Lawaypora area and evacuated thirteen minor children.
Action comes following the mysterious death of an inmate in the orphanage, which was operating illegally for years, Chairman Child Welfare Committee, Dr Khair-un-Nissa told Kashmir Observer.
“I had also served a legal notice to the owner of the so-called orphanage during my visit; however the trustees failed to respond, prompting us to conduct a surprise raid. This orphanage was being run illegally and action warranted under will be initiated against the owners very soon,” she added.
She also said that police have also taken cognizance of the mysterious death of the inmate and have set investigation into motion. She said few suspects have also been detained for questioning in connection with the case.
“The joint raid was conducted late last evening after an inmate died under mysterious circumstances, while three children who were rescued disclosed the owners of the trust had taken them to some unknown location. Police are investigating the matter,” Khair-un-Nissa said.
A police official while confirming the action said that thirteen children were evacuated from the orphanage while investigations have been taken up into the mysterious death of an inmate of the said illegal orphanage.
