Srinagar– A family of seven including two minors had a miraculous escape after a houseboat capsized into River Jhelum, The Bund near State Bank of India, as a result of strong winds and rainfall here this evening.
Property worth lakhs of rupees damaged after a houseboat belonging to one Ghulam Qadir Ghasi son of Late Assadullah Ghasi sank into River Jhelum this evening, witnesses told Kashmir Observer.
They said that the houseboat capsized as a result of strong winds and heavy rain. However all eight members of the family were safely rescued by the river police with the help of locals and paramilitary CRPF.
“We use this houseboat for residential purposes and not commercial, two minor children were among eight members who had a miraculous escape. My houseboat was already damaged and I had informed the authorities well in advance, however no serious measures were taken by the government in this direction,” Ghasi told Kashmir Observer.
He said that he had requested the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar to relocate them to some safer place, so that his family is saved from such incidents.
“I am grateful to the river police, CRPF and locals who came to our rescue and saved the lives of my family. We are under open sky at the moment as we don’t have any makeshift arrangement to live in,” he added.
Ghasi appealed to the Divisional Administration to provide compensation for the losses his houseboat suffered due to the rainfall and ensure relocation of the destitute homeless family at the earliest.
