EMBARKING on a train journey in the picturesque region of Kashmir was an exciting prospect for us. The advent of trains in Kashmir had created quite a buzz, and our Melbourne Educational Institute Serch Ganderbal had planned a delightful excursion to mark the occasion. Our teachers ensured that our tickets were in order as we boarded the train from Srinagar Railway Station. The sheer sight of the train was a thrilling experience for us, having only seen it on TV screens before. The sound of the train’s horn was music to our ears, and it brought a smile to all our faces.
As we settled into the train, our teachers began to acquaint us with its features and amenities. The digital meters, loudspeakers, and charging ports caught our attention, and we were intrigued by the loud announcements of upcoming stops and helpful reminders for passengers. The train had fans installed for our convenience, making the journey even more comfortable. However, years later, my second encounter with the train was a stark contrast to my first. The condition of the train was appalling, with broken meters, non-functioning charging ports, and seats covered in grime and scribbling. The train was littered with wrappers and garbage, and it was clear that the passengers lacked the basic civility to keep the train clean. It was a sorry sight, and it made me wonder who was responsible for maintaining the train in such a dismal state.
To ensure the safety and comfort of passengers, it is imperative that the railway department takes swift action to renovate the train and restore its amenities. There have been issues with its upkeep and security.
According to reports, the infrastructure is in a bad situation, with antiquated signalling systems, badly maintained tracks, and insufficient workers. On the railway network, these problems have been blamed for accidents and delays. The department should also impose penalties on passengers who indulge in anti-social behavior, such as smoking or harassing fellow passengers. The installation of an ATM at Nowgam Srinagar Railway Station would be a welcome addition, and the department must take measures to improve the dismal state of the washrooms at Nowgam Srinagar Railway Station. Train journeys are an integral part of our lives, and it is essential that we maintain them in a hygienic and functional state. The railway department must take proactive steps to restore the train’s amenities and ensure that passengers have a safe and comfortable journey.
