THIS is with reference to the write-up, “WHO thwarts our perception of e-cigarettes” in Kashmir Observer, dated February 28, 2023. Smokers have a wrong perception that e-cigarettes are the right alternate means for them to quit cigarette smoking. On the contrary, test results have shown that they could cause potential health problems, including cancer, as they contain chemicals and toxins that are addictive. When you stop using them, you go into withdrawal and feel depressed, and incorrigibly tetchy. Researches have proved that use of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) have not been shown to be effective in curbing and stopping cigarette smoking. Tobacco related toxins have also been found in the aerosol vapor of ENDS products. Tiny metal particles that are most likely from the casings and heating elements have been found in the aerosols created from this device. There is increasing evidence that inhaled nicotine from ENDS damages lung tissues and lowers the body’s natural resistance to infections and to cancers. It is a matter for concern that youngsters who use e-cigarettes are most likely to develop brain impairment.
