Srinagar- A Kashmiri pilgrim Syed Muhammad Shafi Rizvi, resident of Bota Kadal locality of Srinagar passed away in Karbala (Iraq) on Sunday afternoon.
Shafi had left Srinagar along with his wife and other relatives for Umrah & Ziyarat pilgrimage on 30th January, 2023.
Family sources said he died due to cardiac arrest.
“Although he had some health issues, he died from cardiac arrest” Abbas Rizvi, his nephew, told Kashmir Observer.
The religious pilgrimage was supposed to be for a period of 45 days across four countries of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran and Syria.
Abbas said that Shafi had successfully completed the Umrah pilgrimage and had visited various Shrines in Iraq but he lost his battle with life in the holy city of Karbala.
“It is a moment of grief for us but a moment of honor for him. He has died in the city where the Chief of martyrs resides. Many people wish to die in that holy land.” Abbas said.
Amid sobs, Shafi was laid to rest in the holy city of Karbala in a graveyard three kilometers away from the Shrine of Imam Hussain (a.s).
As Shafi’s body lays buried in the plains of Karbala, the other members of his family and the group will leave for Iran on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, various socio-political organizations have condoled his demise and prayed for the peace of the departed soul.
