Srinagar- The administration in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Friday ordered freezing of ill-gotten properties worth crores of five drug peddlers, who were given a reasonable time period to prove their assets as legal.
The order was issued by the District Magistrate, Shopian under the provisions of Chapter VA of the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotic Substances Act, 1985, an official spokesperson said.
He said that the competent authority under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, Shopian, accorded a seal of approval to freezing of ill-gotten properties worth crores of five drug peddlers who were given reasonable time period to prove credentials and produce the requisite documents that substantiate the property as legal.
As per the orders issued today, the spokesperson said, the properties shall not be transferred for any other use undertaken on it without the permission of the District Magistrate.
“It included illegally acquired buildings and land from the proceeds of narcotics trade. The properties were purchased from ill-gotten money of drug trafficking within the last six years in the name of accused persons as well as in the name of their kith and kin,” he said.
The district administration, he said, has issued notices to several persons involved in the drug trafficking in the recent past and asked all of them to show cause the source of means of the acquisition of the properties.
