Jammu- Police used batons and fired a few teargas canisters after an eviction drive turned violent in Malik Market along the Narwal bypass in the winter capital on Saturday.
According to reports, hundreds of shopkeepers and locals hit the streets in Malik Market and staged a protest after a team of revenue officials and police reached the area with earthmover machines to carry out an anti-encroachment drive. Angry protesters blocked the road and tried to disrupt the drive. They also pelted stones upon the earthmover machines when an automobile showroom was being demolished.
As the situation turned tense, SSP Jammu Chandan Kohli reached the spot and tried to pacify the protesters. Later, the people allowed vehicular traffic to ply on the road.
However, later in the evening, police used batons and burst tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters who had blocked the road. The outbreak of clashes prompted many people to take shelter in the nearby Wave Mall. A policeman sustained injury during the clashes.
Additional reinforcements were rushed to the spot to contain the situation.
