SRINAGAR- J&K football team was effectively knocked out of the 76th edition Santosh Trophy after the side was hammered 3-0 by hosts Kerala on Thursday. The match was played at EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode, Kerala.
In a must-win game, the Jammu & Kashmir boys did well to keep the match 0-0 till half time. However, the team started to unravel after Kerala’s Viknesh M opened the score in the 51st minute of the match. Unbeaten in the competition thus far, Kerala then added another in the 76th minute through Rizwan Ali. Nijo Gilbert scored the third goal for Kerala in injury time.
The defeat means J&K will not qualify for the next round of the national football championship, even if they defeat Andhra Pradesh on Saturday. The J&K players will rue the lack of competitive football in the 2022 season, as the region’s top most league, the Super Division, failed to kick start. After turmoil in the Football Association, the players will now hope to see better days in the local football scene.
J&K Playing XI: 1) Furqan Ahmad Dar (GK) 3) Zahid Yousif 6) Hyder Yusuf 7) Mohammad Inam 9) Furqan Nabi Zargar 10) Aakif Javaid 11) Adnan Ayub (C) 12) Farhan Ganai 13) Faisal Maqsood Thakur 15) Dimple Bhagat 20) Urfan Hamid Bhat.
