THIS refers to the weekly column by Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat “Use Back to Village as a Platform Against Corruption” (Kashmir Observer Oct 31st 2022). The author has given very important suggestions to create awareness about corruption at the grassroot level. I would in fact suggest creating this kind of awareness in every Municipal Ward and involve the Mohalla committees and Masjid, Mandir & Gurdawara committees of Srinagar city and other urban areas across J&K as well.
Corruption is destroying our institutions and inspite of getting huge salaries, many Govt officers believe that it is their right to demand cuts from contractors and other people. Infact, Chief Secretary also suggested to debate and discuss corruption issues at Panchayat level especially in Gram Sabha meetings, will Sarpaches , Panches , BDO’s and other officials of Rural Development Department make this happen? I think the District Development Councils (DDCs),Block Councils, Panchayat bodies, Municipal Institutions in J&K have to take a call on this now. I would also suggest that educated, honest and upright people must come forward and contest the local bodies elections in future, that is the only solution to wipe out corruption in these institutions.
