Srinagar- After remaining shut for weeks together, the students of Kashmir University’s main campus have urged the university authorities to open the main cafeteria located in the Humanities block of the University.
Speaking on anonymity, a group of students said that it has been weeks that the main cafeteria has been closed for reasons better known to the University authorities.
Students say the presence of other “eateries” or “shops” in the University does not fill the vacuum created by the closure of the main cafeteria.
Moreover, the students said that other cafeterias in the University are more or less like “Dhabas” and they don’t have what students called “the University vibe”. They further said that in absence of the main cafeteria, other cafeterias remain jam packed and it is hard to find space during lunch hours.
“Since I joined the University, I have never seen the cafeteria open, we were compelled to have lunch in the nearby shop which looks more or less like a “Dhaba” said a student of 1st semester from a nearby department.
“In a beautiful campus, we ought to have a good space and chill” he added.
However, the University authorities said the Cafeteria has been closed on the directions of the court.
Speaking to Kashmir Observer, Registrar Kashmir University Nisar Ahmad Mir said that as per the legal procedure we have to re-tender the cafeteria after 11 months but the one holding the contract had approached the court that the space should not be re-tendered.
“The one holding the contract was not allowing us to tender it but he lost the case in the court. On the court directions the University authorities sealed the cafeteria” Nisar Ahmad said.
“the process of re-tendering process has been initiated and the space will be rented” Nisar added.
