Srinagar- The first of the five volume history of the Shia’s of Jammu and Kashmir in Urdu “Tarikh-e-Shiayan-e-Jammu va Kashmir” written by Justice (Retd) Hakim Imtiyaz Hussain was released at an impressive function here on Saturday.
The book was released by Hujatul Islam Haj Agha Mehdi Mahdavipur, the representative of Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, in India.
The English version of the book was released in 2018.
Today’s function was attended by scholars, clergy and academia cutting across sectarian lines who had come from across Jammu and Kashmir.
The programme started with the recitation from the verses of the Holy Quran, followed by a welcome address by Prof. Syed Afzal.
Others who spoke on the occasion included Prof Shad Ramzan, senior journalist Yusuf Jameel, Prof Zaman Azurdah and Maulana Dr Sameer Sidiqui besides Agha Mehdavipur.
In his address, Professor Shad Ramzan said the book has been written keeping aside the lens of sectarianism.
“Vast research has been done to pen down the book and it will go a long way in helping research scholars who intend to do research on Kashmir history” Prof Ramzan said. He dwelt in detail about the rich Marsiya tradition of Kashmir.
Prof Aazurda, said the book is the need of hour as distorted history has been fed to Kashmiris for many centuries.
“It is a book for our shelves and the message from the book is that we should all come together”
Maulana Sameer Siddiqi, said that a cursory reading of the book makes it amply clear that it is not only history of Shia’s but an important part of Kashmir’s Islamic history.
“The book covers the lives of artisans, poets, physicians and other craftsmen in the society and thus making it popular history unlike many others which are chronicles of elites and kings” Sameer said.
Talking to Kashmir Observer on the sidelines of the function, author Justice (Retd) Imtiyaz Hussain said the book includes the history of Jammu, Kashmir and Baltistan.
“The history of Shias of Kashmir from 1320 A.D -1947 A.D has been documented in the book and it touches social, political, cultural spheres of life of Kashmiri Shias.”
“The book is a historical study on the subject which gives an in-depth study of the socio-political and cultural history of the Shias of J&K. It also gives a brief account of the life and works of prominent Shia ulema, rulers, nobles, poets, writers, physicians, historians and eminent Shia personalities who made great efforts to propagate Islam in different areas and made noteworthy contributions in various fields,” the author said.
Hakim Imtiyaz said the book also covers details of how Shia faith was introduced in Kashmir and subsequent tumultuous events that shaped their day to day life.
“There are several misunderstandings among Muslims which need to be removed. I hope the book will help clear such misconceptions in Kashmir history”, he said.
He said four other volumes will be released in the coming months.
