ALL good things inevitably have to come to an end. So did Roger Federer’s amazing tennis career which lasted for 24 glorious years, exactly with that of one of his close sporting friends, Sachin Tendulkar’s. (“Winner, yet more than winning”, Sep. 25). Plagued by recurring injuries, Federer’s long absence from tennis had given rise to speculation that the Swiss legend would hang his boots and racquet anytime soon. For the first time in his illustrious career, Federer was missing in action from Grand Slams in a calendar year in 2022. His trophy-laden career had witnessed multiple moments that have left the tennis world astonished and awestruck. But, sadly the hands that held the biggest trophies frequently for years will no longer be seen holding them. A career that spanned across generations has finally come to an end, leaving a massive void in the beautiful sport.
Seeing the photograph in many newspapers of Federer shedding tears at his swansong at the Laver Cup tournament in London, my eyes too turned moist for a while. That Rafael Nadal struggles to control his emotions seen in the picture, reflects the bonding between the two for decades and manifests the Spaniard’s great respect and love and affection for the Swiss legend. Not only Federer had won the admiration of tennis fans across the world with his elegant and effortless style of play, which was poetry in motion, but he also won their hearts with his humility and modesty. A sporting legend and a gentleman in equal measure – tennis will never be the same without Roger Federer.
