Srinagar- The representatives of Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) on Saturday finally resolved the decades-old issue of sonstruction of a Buddhist monastery on a piece of land in Muslim majority Kargil.
Both the bodies had several meeting this year and on Saturday after several rounds of deliberations they reached an “amicable solution” to the long pending demand of construction of a Gonpa at Kargil.
Political activist Sajjad Hussain (Kargili) told Kashmir Observer that the Buddhists want to construct a temple in Kargil allocated to the LBA, while the residents of Kargil are resisting the demand citing a government notification of 1969, which has defined its land use as commercial and residential, where a temple cannot be built.
He said that no Buddhist lives in more than 20 km radius of this land mass of less than two kanals in the old town of Kargil.
According to a statement, it was unanimously resolved that the land allotted in favour of LBA in terms of the J&K Govt order of 1969 would be honoured by all stakeholders and that the land in question would be utilized solely for the purpose as mentioned in that Govt order as the land exists on this day on the ground.
The statement further said that, it was agreed by all the parties that a land measuring two kanals shall be allotted at Kurbathang through LAHDC Kargil in favour of Lba exclusively for the construction of Gonpa at the earliest so that LBA could start construction as early as possible.
The statement further reads that all the parties also agreed to work together in order to maintain and promote communal harmony in Ladakh.
“It was also decided by both the communities to care and respect the
religious sentiments of each other to set an example of universal brotherhood globally,” it reads
Earlier, on June 13, a Buddhist monk had called for a “peace march” to Kargil from Mulbekh in support of the construction of a Buddhist temple.
However, the KDA raised strong objections to the “politically motivated walk” of Tibetan origin Monk and maintained that it was an attempt to disrupt the communal harmony of Ladakh.
