Srinagar- An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Nowhatta area of Srinagar on the eve of the Independence Day celebrations Sunday , police said.
“Chance #encounter started in Nowhatta area of #Srinagar,” Kashmir Zone police wrote on Twitter.
Police said the exchange of firing was going on and further details were awaited.
Earlier on Sunday a policeman was killed in a grenade attack in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
The incident took place in Qaimoh area on Saturday night.
“A grenade incident was reported yesterday night in Qaimoh #Kulgam. In this #terror incident, 01 police personnel namely Tahir Khan R/O Mendhar, Poonch got injured,” Kashmir Zone Police wrote on Twitter.
The police said the injured personnel was shifted to the GMC hospital in Anantnag where he succumbed to injuries.
