Srinagar- An unspecified number of militants are trapped in an encounter that broke out Saturday night in Rampora area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
According to officials, the gunfight broke after a joint team of police and army launched a cordon and search operation in Rampora area on Saturday night on the basis of specific information about the presence of militants.
When the search team started advances, the officials said, the hiding militants opened fire upon them in a bid to escape from their dragnet under the cover of darkness.
“The joint team returned the fire triggering off an encounter. The exchange of fire is going on,” they said, adding that the exact number of holed-up militants is unknown.
Kashmir Police Zone also confirmed the outbreak of encounter in the area.
“#Encounter has started at #Rampora area of #Kulgam. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” police posted on its official Twitter handle.
