New Delhi- A prominent Muslim face of the BJP and Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is likely to replace Manoj Sinha as the new Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor, media reports here suggest.
Naqv’s name surfaced after indications from the Election Commission that Assembly elections in the Union Territory May be held before the year end.
According to these reports the BJP had decided not to field Naqvi in the recent Rajya Sabha polls In light of his likelihood to get the Lt Governor’s post.
Having grown up in a devout Muslim family in Allahabad, in the village of Bhadari, Uttar Pradesh, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi was attracted to social movements from early age. He joined the Sampoorna Kranti movement, which was launched by Loknayak during the emergency at the age of 17 years.
He unsuccessfully contested for the UP assembly in 1980 as a candidate for the Janata Party. Same year he contested Lok Sabha elections from the Ayodhya constituency as an independent candidate.
He was finally elected to the Lok Sabha from Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur seat in 1998 on BJP ticket and was assigned the post of minister of state for the Ministry of Information and broadcasting during the reign of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
He was elected as an MP of the Rajya Sabha for Uttar Pradesh from 2010 to 2016. Later, he was appointed as Minister of State for Minority Affairs in 2016. He again took his oath in 2019 and continued serving in the Minority Affairs Ministry.
