Celebrated Qawal’s Jamil Rampuri and Shafi Sopori perform at Tagore Hall
Srinagar- A three-Day Central Kashmir Sufi Festival was inaugurated here on Saturday by Vice Chancellor, Cluster University, Srinagar, Prof Qayoom Hussain.
Organized by J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages in association with Cluster University, Srinagar and other allied departments, the festival is part of a series of mega festivals being held across J&K under J&K Governments scheme for Promotion and Development of Cultural Festivals.
On the inaugural day today the students of Cluster University Srinagar presented Hamud which was followed by mesmerizing post lunch Qawalis by students of the University. The main highlight of the festival was Qawali performance by noted Qawal Jamil Rampuri whose enthralling qawalis were followed by renditions of Sufi numbers by Shafi Sopori.
Welcoming the guests in general and audience in particular, Secretary, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and languages, Bharat Singh said that the endeavor of Cultural Academy is to promote all cultural festivals and events in a holistic manner. Elucidating further the Secretary JKAACL said that during the current year the Academy is holding 75 shrine specific Sufi activities apart from mega festivals which would continue to be organized across the Union Territory throughout the year.
The keynote address regarding Sufi-Rishi traditions of Kashmir was read by Prof. Bashar Basheer who specifically highlighted the contribution of various spiritual streams to the evolution of Sufi thought in the Kashmir valley.
In his remarks, chief guest, Prof. Qayoom Hussain said that it was a privilege for the Cluster University Srinagar to be part of such mega festivals and events which highlight the cultural ethos of J&K.
During the 3-Day festival a series of events including Qawalis, Sufi talks and Plays on Sufism will be held.
The inaugural day marked presence of several noted academics and members of general public in audience. Prominent among those who attended the function included Dean Academic Affairs, Dean Social Sciences, Dean Sciences and Registrar Cluster University Srinagar apart from officers of JKAACL.
On the inaugural day today a Sufi talk was also organized in which discussion was held on Sufi traditions of Kashmir with Shamshad Kralvari, Dr. Afaq Aziz and Dr Ghulam Nabi Haleem participating.
The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Shakeel Shaan while as Prof Deeba Sarmad, Dean Humanities &Liberal Arts, Cluster University Srinagar presented vote of thanks.
On the second day of the event, noted Qawals – Nizami Bandhu’s will perform at Tagore Hall here on Sunday. A series of other events will also be organized.
