2 Soldiers Injured In Kulgam Encounter, Militants Escape Military Dragnet
Srinagar- A militant commander was killed and two soldiers injured in two separate encounters in the twin districts of Anantnag and Kulgam in south Kashmir, officials said Saturday.
Police and army’s 3RR launched a joint operation in Sirhama village of Anantnag in the early hours of Saturday after receiving specific information about the presence of militants, a police spokesperson said. When the joint team proceeded towards the suspected spot, he said, the hiding militants fired indiscriminately upon them.
The search team, according to the spokesperson, retaliated to the militant firing, setting off an encounter. In the exchange of gunfire, he said, the holed-up militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of the encounter.
The police identified the killed militant as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Nisar Ahmad Dar alias Musaib of Redwani Bala in neighboring Kulgam district.
As per police records, the spokesperson said, Dar was active since April last year and was a categorized militant.
“He was involved in several killing of civilians & outside labourers besides, he was also involved in grenade lobbing attacks on security forces,” he said.
For his militant activities, the spokesperson said, many case FIRs including 39/2021, 02/2022, 11/2022 have already been registered against him at Police Station Qaimoh. Dar, he said, was also instrumental in motivating gullible youth to join “terror folds”
The spokesperson quoted IGP Kashmir, Vijay Kumar appreciating the joint team and termed the elimination of Dar as a big success as he was wanted by law for his involvement in “gruesome terror activities”.
“Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition has been recovered from the site of the encounter. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law regarding the encounter and further investigation is in progress. People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” the spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, two soldiers were injured in a firefight with militants in Chaki Samad area of Damhal Hanjipora in Kulgam district.
According to reports, Police, Army and CRPF launched a search operation on Saturday morning in the Chaki Samad area on the basis of information suggesting the presence of militants.
When the joint team started advances, the reports said, militants opened fire upon them in an attempt to escape from their dragnet.
In the ensuing firefight, two soldiers identified as Rohit Yadav and Ankesh Kumar were injured. Both of them were reportedly taken to hospital for treatment.
According to reports, the guns fell silent after the initial exchange of fire with militants.
The search operation was later called off, as it was believed that the militants had managed to flee.
