“This college has been running without any officially notified principal for five months and we the students are facing the consequences.”
Srinagar- The students of Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag Tuesday voiced a strong protest against the government’s inability to appoint the permanent principal at the campus.
Kashmir Observer received dozens of calls from the students expressing their anguish over the alleged failure of the current principal in improving the quality of the education and overall system of the varsity.
“Since his appointment as an in-charge principal, Dr. Tariq Qureshi has failed to improve the state of affairs in the varsity,” one of the anguished students who wished anonymity said.
“This college has been running without any officially notified principal for five months and we the students are facing the consequences. The principal in-charge did not attend to our demands for more than five months despite repeated requests of improvement,” another student said.
The college development projects are closed for months, they said, and that has been creating problems for the students.
“The hostel rooms are in shambles,” said another student. “There’s absolutely no privacy between the two rooms as only plywood has been used as a wall. The roads are completely destroyed and it looks as if we’re in some godforsaken land rather than a prestigious medical college.”
Despite his expired term, the students said, the incharge principal continues to head the campus.
It’s pertinent to mention here that on July 21, 2021, Dr. Tariq Qureshi, Professor and Head, Department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College, Srinagar was assigned a “temporary” assignment as a principal incharge “till a regular arrangement was made”.
The students have also demanded that the former principal Showkat Ahmad Jeelani who is currently posted as Secretary Technical in the Health and Medical Education Department, should once again be handed the official handling of the GMC Anantnag.
