Srinagar– Unidentified militants on Saturday shot dead a Special Police Officer (SPO) and injured his brother in an attack in Budgam district, five days after a civilian was killed in similar manner in the central Kashmir district.
According to reports, unidentified militants appeared in Chadabugh village of Soibugh on Saturday evening and opened fire upon SPO Ishfaq Ahmad and his brother Umar Ahmad, leaving them critically injured.
The injured brothers were removed by their family and neighbours to the SK institute of medical sciences (SKIMS) Bemina for treatment. However, the doctors there declared the policeman brought dead.
The SPO’s brother Umar —said to be a student is battling for his life at the hospital.
Soon after the attack, police, army and CRPF reached the spot and launched a massive search operation to nab the militants. The search operation was underway when the last reports came in.

Pertinently, the attack on SPO and his brother comes five days after a civilian was shot dead by unidentified militants early this week in the Budgam district.
On March 21, unknown militants barged into the house of Tajamul Mohi-ud-din Dar in Gotpora village of the district and shot him dead.
Recently, the Inspector General of police (IGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar had claimed that Lashkar-e-Taiba’s group led by Mehran’s successor Basit was responsible for the recent killings, including Dar’s in Budgam.
Twin Blasts Cause Panic In Rajouri
Meanwhile two explosions in quick succession sparked panic among the people in a busy market in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday evening, officials said.
No one was injured, they said.
The first blast was heard around 8.15 pm near a garbage dump in Kotranka market, the officials said.
Police and other security personnel rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area to investigate the cause of the blast.
As the investigation was underway, another blast occurred 10 minutes later, the officials said, adding the whole area has been cordoned off.
The officials did not rule out militant angle in the incident.
