Srinagar- At least five people, including three policemen, a CRPF constable and a civilian were injured on Wednesday in a grenade attack in Rainawari area of this capital city.
According to reports, unidentified militants lobbed a grenade towards a checkpoint manned by police and CRPF near Zindshah Masjid in Rainawari area of the city here on Wednesday evening. In the grenade attack, an on-duty policeman and two off-duty traffic cops, besides a CRPF Constable identified as Tirath Singh and a civilian were injured.
The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“All are fully stable and completely out of danger. Kindly don’t spread wrong figures by talking to unreliable sources,” police said in a statement.
Soon after the incident, a search operation was launched in the area to nab the attackers.
Pertinently, the grenade attack on cops comes a day after a policeman on covert operation was killed in a brief shootout with militants in Soura area of this capital city.
Selection grade constable Amir Hussain Lone of Hirri Bala in Kupwara was critically injured when a group of three militants roaming in a car exchanged gunfire with a covert team of police in Zoonimar area of Soura on Tuesday afternoon, police said on Tuesday. Lone, who received gunshot wounds in upper parts of body including neck, was removed to the nearby SK institute of medical sciences for treatment where he succumbed.
Meanwhile, four alleged militant associates were arrested and as many grenades recovered from their possession in the city, police said.
Zubair Altaf Shiekh, a resident of 90 Feet Soura Srinagar on way towards Hamandia Colony was intercepted by a naka party at Bemina Chowk, a police spokesperson said.
“During his frisking, the police party recovered one Chinese hand grenade from his possession”, he said, adding, “the accused was instantly arrested and a case vide FIR number 15/22 u/s 7/25, 13 of ULA registered in this regard,” he said.
The spokesperson said that the accused was put to sustained examination and during questioning he revealed that he had received the grenade from another OGW namely Shamim Ahmed Chilloo of Tankipora Shaheed Gunj.
“This accused confessed that he had received a consignment of four hand grenades and handed over one grenade each to Amir Rehman Dar of Tengpura Bypass, Shahid Ahmed Mir of Dangerpora Nowgam and Zubair Sheikh ( 1st arrestee).
Later raids were conducted on these locations and three other OGWs were also arrested.
“On their instances three more hand grenades were also recovered,” the spokesperson said, adding, “During course of investigation, it came out that the accused were working on directions of the (militant) group LeT,”
The spokesperson also claimed that the first arrested accused was on his way to throw the recovered hand grenade today evening and the plans were thwarted by timely preventive action of the naka party.”
