Were Involved In Sarpanch, ASI; Inspector’s Killing: Police
Srinagar- Police on Wednesday claimed to have killed three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants involved in the recent killing of a Sarpanch in the city outskirts, besides two policemen, including an Inspector in Srinagar and south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Police, army’s 50RR launched a cordon and search operation in Nowgam area of the city on the basis of specific input about the presence of militants, a police spokesperson said Wednesday. The hiding militants, he said, opened heavy fire upon the search team when they were moving towards the suspected spot.
The joint team, he said, retaliated effectively to the militant fire setting off an encounter.
The spokesperson said that later paramilitary CRPF personnel also joined the operation in which three categorized militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the encounter site.
Police identified the trio as Adil Nabi Teli of Pampore, Shakir Ahmad Tantray of Shopian and Yasir Ahmad Wagay of Kulgam.
As per police records, the spokesperson said that the killed militants were active since 2021 and affiliated with Lashkar. The trio, he said, were part of groups involved in “several terror crime cases including attack on Police/SF and civilian atrocities”.
The spokesperson also quoted IGP Kashmir, Vijay Kumar as saying that the three killed militants were not only involved in the recent killing of Sarpanch Sameer Ahmad Bhat at Khanmoh here but were also planning to attack government forces on the highway.
Teli, he said, along with his associates was also involved in killing of Inspector Pervaiz Ahmad Dar at Nowgam on June 22 last year, and killing of Javaid Ahmed Malik at Lurgam in Tral.
“Besides, he was also involved in grenade attack on joint party of Police & CRPF at Barbarshah Srinagar in which one civilian was killed and three civilians were injured,” he added.
Similarly, the spokesperson said that Tantray and Wagay were also involved in several cases including killing of ASI Mohammad Ashraf near Police Station Bijbehara, Anantnag on December 22, last year.
“Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including 01 AK rifle, 03 AK Magazines, 14 AK rounds, 02 Pistols, 04 Pistol Magazines, 06 Pistol rounds were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” he said.
The spokesperson quoted IGP Kashmir terming the elimination of “wanted terrorists” as a big success and congratulated the joint forces for conducting successful anti-militancy operation without any collateral damage.
“In this regard, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added.
Meanwhile, an army spokesperson said that a soldier was injured in the encounter that broke out around 2:05 in the morning.
The operation, he said, began at 1:00 amand concluded at 9:15 with the killing of three holed-up militants inside a residential house.
Gunfight Forces Suspension Of Train Service
The authorities on Wednesday suspended train services on the 137-kilometre Banihal-Baramulla rail line following a gunfight in Nowgam area in the outskirts of Srinagar.
The decision, sources said was taken following a communication to railway authorities by the police stating therein that “in view of the ongoing encounter at Shankarpora jurisdiction of police station Nowgam Srinagar and apprehension of law and order problem, train services may be suspended from Banihal to Baramulla and vice versa.” This is for the second time in the last four days train services were affected in the Valley due to gunfight.
On March 11 the authorities suspended services from Awantipora in Pulwama district to Anantnag amid the killing of two militants in Naina Batpora, the area in Pulwama district which falls in the vicinity of Parigam, one of the railway stations in south Kashmir.
