Srinagar- Three soldiers have been injured in an ongoing encounter between militants and government forces that broke out on Wednesday in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
Police, army and the paramilitary CRPF personnel laid a siege around Nowgam village of the district on Wednesday evening after receiving inputs about the presence of militants, a police official said. When the joint team started advances, he said, the militants hiding in the village opened fire upon them in a bid to escape from the dragnet.
The search team, he said, returned the fire setting off an encounter.
According to reports, three soldiers were injured in the exchange of fire, two among them critically. The soldiers identified as Somveer Kumar, Lance Naik Mayank Singh and Lance Naik Sunil Kumar have been removed to army’s 92 base hospital here for advanced treatment.
“#Encounter has started at Check Nowgam area of #Shopian. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” Kashmir Police posted on its official Twitter handle earlier.
Meanwhile, reports said that the government forces have installed high-beam lights in the village and have tightened the cordon further to thwart any attempt of militants to escape under the cover of darkness.
