Srinagar- Jammu and Kashmir reported on Wednesday 5818 fresh cases of novel Coronavirus, the highest single day spike since the outbreak of pandemic, while four more people succumbed to the deadly infection in the Union Territory during the last 24 hours.
According to officials, Kashmir Valley reported an unprecedented spike in Covid-19 cases on Wednesday with 4066 people confirmed to have contracted the deadly infection during the last 24 hours. In Jammu division, 1752 new cases of virus were registered, taking the total number of people infected since the outbreak of pandemic in J&K to 372669.
Pertinently, the fresh cases reported on Wednesday are the highest ever spike Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed since the outbreak of pandemic in 2020. The Union Territory had recorded 5,443 cases of virus last year in May.
In the Valley, officials said, Srinagar reported the highest 1745 new cases of Coronavirus, Baramulla 791, Budgam 594, Pulwama 230, Anantnag 217, Kulgam 162, Bandipora 130, Kupwara 93,Ganderbal 84 and Shopian 20.
In the winter capital, officials said, Jammu reported a maximum of 1131 new cases of virus, Udhampur 105, Kathua 100, Samba 89, Rajouri 85, Poonch 66, Doda 63, Reasi 56, Ramban 53 and Kishtwar 5.
“Moreover, 1255 more COVID-19 patients have recovered and been discharged from various hospitals including 592 from Jammu Division and663 from Kashmir Division,” the officials said.
Also, they said that four more people died of Coronavirus related complications in Jammu division on Wednesday, raising the death toll in the pandemic to 4579 in J&K—2232 in Jammu division and 2347 in Kashmir Valley.
The officials further said that no new cases of Mucormycosis were reported today, thus the total number of confirmed cases remains 51 across J&K.
J&K Bank Uri Shut After Staffers Test +Ve
The district authorities on Wednesday shut down a branch of Jammu and Kashmir Bank in Chandanwari area of Uri in Baramulla district after five employees tested positive for Coronavirus.
According to reports, five bank employees came out positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday, a day after their samples were taken for RT-PCR tests to determine if they were infected. Besides the bank staffers, 3 3 employees of a private office at Challan Boniyar have also tested positive.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Uri Harvinder Singh told a local news agency GNS that to check the spread of infection J&K Bank branch Chandanwari Uri and Jamkash office Challan Boniyar shall remain closed for two days—20 and 21 January.
Meanwhile all the employees of both offices have been directed to go for COVID-19 test. The authorities have also asked for fumigation of both the offices.
