Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) that was launched in 2014, the central government carries the cleanliness survey to promote sanitation in urban centres. According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the result was decided on the basis of 28 days long nationwide cleanliness survey covering 4,320 cities and feedback was taken from 4.2 core people.
The cities are usually rated using a star system and this year, 342 cities, an increase from 56 in 2018, would be given certificates under some star rating. This includes nine five-star cities, 166 three-star cities, 167 one-star cities.
As many as 342 cities were conferred with some star rating in this year’s annual cleanliness survey, with a total of 4,320 cities taking part in it.
