Srinagar: Police on Thursday claimed to have killed a militant responsible for shooting at and injuring a shopkeeper in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday evening.
Anayat Ashraf Dar, a recently active militant was killed in an encounter in Keshwa village of Shopian on Thursday, hours after he shot at and injured Jeewer Hameed Bhat, a shopkeeper in Chitragam Kalan area of the district on Wednesday night, a police spokesperson said Thursday.
The slain militant, he said, was throughout the nightlong operation given the opportunity to lay down his arms.
“He was offered to surrender for the whole night, but he didn’t surrender. Later on, during the encounter the said newly active terrorist got neutralised. One Pistol & ammunition were also recovered from his possession,” he said.
Giving more details leading to the gunfight, the police spokesperson said that after thorough interrogation of several suspects after the attack and input from sources, a CASO was launched at village Keshwa.
“While laying a cordon he fired upon the joint search party. All civilians in the adjoining houses to the target area were evacuated,” he said.
The police spokesperson also claimed that Dar was earlier an OGW and also involved in drugs.
“Anayat also used to threaten other people in and around his village with his illegal acquired weapons,” he added.
