Soldier Opens Fire At Auto Driver, Foil “Rifle Snatching” Bid
Srinagar: Suspected militants on Wednesday shot at and injured a shopkeeper in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
22-year-old Zameer Hameed Bhat was fired upon by suspected militants at his house in Chitragam Kalan area of the district on Wednesday night, reports said. Bhat, who sustained gunshot injuries in his leg, was removed to sub-district hospital Zainapora for treatment.
The youth is said to be running a readymade garment store in his native village.
In a statement issued here, a police spokesperson said that preliminary investigation has revealed that “terrorists” had fired upon the youth causing injuries to his leg.
“He has been evacuated to a nearby hospital for treatment where his condition is said to be stable,” he said.
He further said that a case in this regard under relevant sections of law has been registered.
“Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this terror crime. Area has been cordoned and search in the area is going on,” the police spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, an auto-rickshaw driver was shot at by a soldier on Wednesday for allegedly snatching the latter’s weapon in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
Mohsin Ahmad (24) sustained bullet injuries in his leg after he was shot at by the soldier of a patrolling party at Azadgunj in Baramulla district, they said.
A defence spokesman said the incident took place when Ahmad tried to snatch the soldier’s weapon.
“The individual was shot in the legs to thwart the weapon snatching attempt,” he said.
The spokesman said Ahmad had assaulted a soldier on duty in similar circumstances around two months ago.
The individual was counselled by the Army on that occasion and was let off on the assurance of his family members,” he said.
A case of stone pelting was also registered against him in 2012 and 2014.
“Ahmad had gone missing on August 21, 2019 and was apprehended on October 5 that year at Kralahar Naka, Kanispura in a military operation. Subsequently, he was released from custody on June 22, 2020,” he said.
The spokesman added that police have registered a case in the latest incident and investigation is in progress.
Meanwhile, a police spokesperson in a statement issued late night said that statements of eye witnesses, family and other bystanders acquainted with facts and circumstances are being recorded besides, evidence including CCTV footage etc is also being collected and analyzed.
“The investigation into the matter is going on and the full circumstances leading to the incident from all possible angles is being ascertained,” he added. (With PTI inputs)
