REVEALING a shocking spike of crimes committed against women in Jammu & Kashmir, the National Crime Records Bureau’s latest report has divulged that over 247 women were allegedly raped in J&K last year.
As per the data available in NCRB’s “Crime in India 2020” report, J&K recorded 243 rape cases involving 247 victims. The statistics show that in 2020, there were nine cases of dowry deaths, 349 cases of cruelty against women by their husbands or relatives.
At least 10 attempts to rape cases have been registered in different police stations in the region. Eleven cases of unnatural offences have also been reported from Jammu and Kashmir last year.

Subsequently, the NCRB report revealed that there were 1639 cases of assault on women involving 1658 victims in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Three cases of sexual harassment at workplaces were also reported last year.
The J&K Police had also registered 56 cases related to the use of criminal force on women with intent to disrobe last year. Three cases of voyeurism and 31 cases of stalking have also been registered in the same year.
The NCRB data has also revealed that there has been a significant increase in the overall crime rate in Jammu and Kashmir. Police have registered 28911 cases under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and State Local Law (SLW) in 2020 compared to 25408 and 27276 cases in 2019 and 2018, respectively.
More than 183 people were murdered in 2020. Likewise 581 cases of attempt to murder involving 677 victims were registered last year. Around 581 cases of death caused by negligence were booked in 2020.
The NCRB figures reveal that J&K has witnessed a 15 per cent increase in cognisable crimes in 2020 as compared to 2019.
The report said that Jammu and Kashmir including Ladakh registered 29,314 (403 cases in Ladakh) criminal cases under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) or under the Special Local Laws (SLL) in 2020. The murder cases saw an increase of 25% with 149 cases in 2020 as against 119 in 2019.
Divulging more details, the data shows an approximate 29% increase in crimes against children with 606 incidents in 2020 in comparison to 473 and 470 cases in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
The report also reveals that the augmenting suicide cases in J&K have played a significant part in the increased crime statistics with approximately 472 incidences of attempt to commit suicide in 2020.
As per the report, the region has also recorded 317 cases of offences against the state.
