Over100 Militants Killed In Kashmir So Far This Year: Police
Srinagar: Three militants of The Resistance Front (TRF) were killed in an overnight encounter with government forces in Sopore town of Baramulla district, police said Tuesday.
Acting on specific input regarding the presence of militants, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, Army’s 52RR and CRPF in Peth Seer area of Sopore on Monday night, a police spokesperson said Tuesday. He said the hiding militants opened fire upon search team when given an opportunity to surrender.
The joint search party, he said, retaliated to the militants firing setting off an encounter.
“However due to darkness the operation was suspended, while the cordon was kept intact. In the wee hours, repeated announcements were again made to the hiding terrorists to surrender, but the terrorists again fired on joint search party and the fire was retaliated,” the police spokesperson said.
In the ensuing encounter, he said, three militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter.
The police identified the trio as Faisal Fayaz and Rameez Ah Ghanie of Shopian and Gh Mustafa Sheikh of Kupwara, associated with TRF.
As per police records, the spokesperson said that the killed militants were part of groups involved in several “terror crime cases” including attacks on security establishments and “civilian atrocities”.
“Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including 1 AK-47 rifle & 02 Pistols were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes,” he said.
“In this connection, Police has registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated,” he added.
The police spokesperson also quoted Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar congratulating the joint teams working with great synergy and coordination on the ground for achieving this milestone and termed it as a big success.
“Pertinently, the collective efforts of J&K Police, Army, CRPF & people of Kashmir Valley have led to neutralisation of more than 100 terrorists in the current year so far in Kashmir division” Kumar said.
Pertinently, the encounter in Sopore broke out hours after police in a covert operation killed TRF Chief Abbas Sheikh, and his deputy Saqib Manzoor, in Aloochi Bagh area of the uptown city here.
Grenade Lobbed On CRPF In Old City
Meanwhile unidentified militants on Tuesday lobbed a grenade at a picket of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Zaina Kadal area of the Downtown Srinagar.
According to reports, unknown militants hurled a grenade towards the picket of CRPF 23 battalion at Mujahid Manzil in Zainakadal area of the Old City on Tuesday evening. However, the grenade did not cause any loss of life or property.
Soon after the incident, police and CRPF reinforcements reached the area and launched a search operation to nab the attackers.
