Srinagar: In an unprecedented move the Jammu and Kashmir administration has directed all government and semi-government departments and educational institutions to hoist tricolour this Sunday to mark the 75th Independence day.
“Independence Day will be celebrated in all schools. Directions should be conveyed to all the CEOs, Principals/headmasters to host the national flag at all schools. Videos and photos of the function will be uploaded on Google drive,” reads a circular issued by the J&K government.
Though all the educational institutes in J&K remain closed in wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the staff has been directed to attend August 15 celebrations.
According to reports, tricolour will be hoisted at 23,000 schools and hundreds of government buildings across the Union Territory on Sunday. Directions to unfurl tricolour have also been issued to Panchayat representatives.
Kashmir University has also issued a circular that reads “A flag hoisting ceremony will be held in the University of Kashmir on Sunday, the 15th of August 2021 at 10:15 am. All employees of the varsity are invited to the ceremony.”
Similar directive was passed earlier whereby all buildings housing government offices will be hoisting the tri-colour.
A massive tricolour will be hoisted on iconic Afghan era fort atop Srinagar’s Koh-i-Maran in the heart of downtown Srinagar. The flag, according to officials, will be 24 feet x 36 feet.
The construction of a base to host the flag began earlier this month and the flag will be officially unfurled by the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday.
The mast measuring 100 feet for the flag had been brought from Delhi and weighs six tonnes.
Notably, Jammu and Kashmir had its own flag and constitution before the former state was divided into two Union Territories and its special status was abrogated.
Earlier, army unfurled 100 – feet high tricolour at the tourist resort of Gulmarg.
