Srinagar: At least ten civilians, including two women were injured on Tuesday in a grenade blast in the busy Hari Singh High Street (HSHS) in the heart of this capital city.
According to eyewitnesses, unknown militants on Tuesday afternoon hurled a grenade towards the armoured vehicle of paramilitary Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) deployed near the Hanuman Mandir in the busy marketplace of Hari Singh High Street. The grenade, they said, exploded with a bang leaving at least ten civilians, including two civilians injured with splinters.
All of them were removed to the SMHS hospital for treatment.
“Nine injured people were brought to the hospital for treatment. While eight were locals, another was a non-local woman from Kolkata. They had received minor injuries and are stable,”
The injured have been identified as Owais Ahmad of Chanpora, Gulzar Ahmad Ganai of Ajas Bandipora, at present Magarmal Bagh here, Raigan Singh of Ramban, Abdul Gani Shah of Beerwah, Mushtaq Ahmad of Khomeini Chowk Bemina (TSO Food and Supplies), Tariq Ahmad of Burzhama, Suhail Ahmad Dar of Chadoora, Zulaikha of Kargil, Firdous Ahmad Kotta of Bemina and Aparna Dera of Kolkata, presently putting up at HSHS.
The surprise militant attack, eyewitnesses said triggered panic in the busy market and forced the people to run helter skelter. The shopkeepers, he said, downed their shutters while the vendors abandoned their carts and ran towards the safer places.
According to the eyewitnesses, the grenade attack also caused brief disruption in the movement of traffic.
Later, senior police and paramilitary officers reached the spot to assess the situation. The forces also carried out random frisking around the area in an attempt to nab the attackers.
“Around 2:40pm, a miscreant lobbed a grenade towards the SSB bullet proof bunker. The grenade hit the vehicle and exploded along the roadside causing minor injuries to two civilians,” DIG CRPF, Central Kashmir, Kishor Prasad told journalists at the spot.
“No injury was caused to any security force personnel in the attack,” he added.
Pertinently, the grenade attack on paramilitary personnel comes a day after militants shot dead a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sarpanch and his Panch wife in an audacious attack in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday.
Last Tuesday, a policeman and a civilian were injured at Khanyar area here when unidentified militants had opened indiscriminate fire upon two vehicles of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police.
CRPF Man Injured In Shopian Attack
A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) man was injured on Tuesday in a militant attack in Zainapora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
Constable Ajay Kumar of CRPF178 battalion was injured when militants fired upon a road opening party (ROP) in the Kralcheck area of Zainapora in the early hours of Tuesday, officials said. The injured CRPF man was removed to the nearby hospital for treatment. His condition is said to be stable.
Soon after the attack, the official said, additional reinforcements of police and CRPF reached the area and launched a search operation to nab the attackers.
