Srinagar: Unidentified militants on Tuesday opened fire upon a police vehicle in Saida Kadal area of the city; however no one was injured in the surprise attack.
Around 5:50 pm Tuesday, unknown militants opened fire upon a police vehicle near the Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Saida Kadal branch along the University of Kashmir road, witnesses told Kashmir Observer. They said the sudden burst of gunfire prompted the traders to down their shutters and run towards the safer places. Many passerby, they said, were also seen running helter skelter after the gunshots resonated in the area.
“I was returning home when the gunfire rattled in Saida Kadal Chowk. I got into a house and remained took shelter there for nearly 15 minutes,” Mohammad Asif, a local said.
He said that many shoppers ran for their lives, while the traders also downed their shutters fearing outbreak of encounter in the locality.
Soon after the attack, the eyewitnesses said, a contingent of police and CRPF personnel appeared in the area and launched a cordon and search operation to nab the attackers.
The eyewitnesses said that cops not only carried searches of several houses in the locality but also questioned the shopkeepers about the attack. The search operation, according to witnesses continued for several hours. However, no arrests were made.
Meanwhile, SHO Police Station Rainawari, Rakesh Pandita told a local news agency KNT that all cops are safe and sound. He said windowpanes of the vehicle were damaged in the attack.
Militants Injure Cop’s Wife, Daughter In Anantnag
Meanwhile a late evening report from Anantnag said suspected militants shot at and injured the wife and daughter of a police constable in Verinag area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
According to reports, suspected militants barged into the house of policeman Sajad Ahmad Malik in village Kokagund of Verinag on Tuesday evening and opened fire upon his wife and daughter leaving both of them injured.
The injured identified as Malik’s wife Naidha Jan (43) and daughter Madhiya (17) were removed to District Hospital Anantnag, the report said. However they were shifted to GMC Anantnag for specialized treatment.
A doctor at District Hospital Anantnag said that Naidha has suffered bullet injuries in leg and abdomen while Madhiya has bullet injury in gluteal region. He said both are stable.
It was not immediately known if Malik was at home at the time of the incident. The officer said that soon after the attack, the entire area was cordoned off and searches launched to trace the assailants.
Meanwhile, police quoting eyewitnesses said that Mufti Altaf of JeM was identified as one of the attackers.
“As per eye witnesses, #terrorist of proscribed #terror outfit JeM Mufti Altaf R/O Nathipira Dooru was identified as one of the #attackers. Further details shall follow,” the police posted on its official Twitter handle.
