Srinagar: Dozens of youth from Dalgate and Sonwar areas of Srinagar city on Monday morning staged a peaceful protest at Press Enclave in Srinagar demanding closure of all liquor shops at the tourist hub Boulevard Road and Sonwar areas of Srinagar city.
The protesting youth were carrying placards seeking an end to drugs and wine shops in Kashmir.
‘We Won’t Allow Outsiders To Disturb Peace’, Close Down Liquor Shops’, the placards read.
Speaking to media persons at Press Enclave, the protesting youngsters said the Government wants to make the valley of Sufis a liquor hub by granting licenses for sale of liquor at dozens of places.
Sameer Ahmad, one of the protesters, said drunkards have created nuisance in Dalgate and Sonwar areas.
“You are claiming to wage a war against drugs but allowing liquor shops to function normally,” he said.
He added that drunkards are creating ruckus on a daily basis, making the movement of womenfolk difficult.
While pleading with the government to stop liquor shops, they said that liquor and drugs have destroyed the lives of Kashmiri youth. This menace has triggered suicides in the Valley. (CNS)
