Srinagar: Much to the shock of the pedestrians, a youth after alighting from a cycle, jumped into the river Jehlum at Cement Bridge here in Qamarwari area of Srinagar city.
Eyewitnesses said that a youth was riding on a cycle when he suddenly stopped on the Cement Bridge, alighted from it and jumped into the river.
People gathered on the bridge shortly after the incident. Police rushed to spot while some locals unsuccessfully tried to retrieve the body.
A police official said they are trying to identify him from the cycle he has left behind till body is fished out from the river.
Meanwhile, police foiled a suicide bid on Budshah Bridge in Srinagar Monday afternoon.
The woman whose identity has been concealed is a resident of Budshah Nagar Natipora. She appeared on the Budshah Bridge and tried to jump into the river Jehlum. “However, the alert policemen on the spot stopped her and bundled her into a police vehicle,” eyewitnesses said.
A police official said that the lady has been pacified and is being counselled while reasons behind taking the extreme step are being investigated.
On Saturday, Shoaib Bashir, son of an ReT teacher Bashir Ahmad Mir, a resident of Avil-Noorabad in DH Pora area of Kulgam district committed suicide. Before committing suicide, Shoaib had recorded a video blaming the withholding of his father’s salary by the government for his desperate situation.
