Foreign Militant Involved In Councillors Killing Among Trapped: IGP
Srinagar- An encounter broke out between militants and state forces in Sopore area of north Kashmir on Tuesday, police said.
State forces launched a cordon and search operation in Nathipora area Sopore after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said.
He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants opened fire at a search party of the forces, who retaliated.
The encounter is going on and further details are awaited, the official said.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar said that a foreign militant involved in killing two councillors was among those trapped in the encounter.
Two councillors namely Reyaz Ahmad Peer and Shamasdin Peer besides policeman Shafqat Nazir Khan were killed in Sopore in a militant attack on March 29 earlier this year.
