4 Policemen Suspended For ‘Inappropriate’ Retaliation
Srinagar: A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillor and a special police officer were killed on Monday in a militant attack in Sopore town of Baramulla district, police said.
BJP councillor Reyaz Ahmad Peer of Ningli, another councillor Shamas Din and SPO Shafqat Nazir of Mundji were seriously injured when militants opened fire upon them near the sub-district hospital Sopore on Monday afternoon, a police spokesperson said. He said that Peer and the SPO succumbed to their injuries while another councillor Shamas Din was removed to the hospital for treatment.
Soon after the attack, teams of police, army and CRPF reached the spot and launched a search operation to nab the attackers. Inspector General of police (IGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar also visited the shootout spot.
He further said that the preliminary investigation has revealed that a local militant Mudasir Pandit of Lashkar-e-Taiba along with a foreign militant are involved in the said attack.
“However, further investigations are rigorously going on. IGP Kashmir also took serious note of the poor and inappropriate retaliation by the PSOs of protected persons present on spot and directed SSP Sopore to put four PSOs under suspension,” he said.
According to the police spokesperson, IGP Kashmir also chaired a security review meeting with Commander 5-Sector RR, DIG CRPF and SSP Sopore.
“The main focus of meeting was today’s attack by the militants in Sopore Town and the necessary security measures to be taken to counter such attacks. While interacting with the officers, the IGP Kashmir urged upon the participating officers that it is of crucial importance to enhance security of vulnerable persons and to take all necessary measures to thwart away the nefarious designs of militants,” he said.
“Meanwhile, police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this crime, the police spokesperson said, adding Cordon and search operation at various locations is going on to nab the assailants,”
CRPF Man Injured In Lawaypora Attack Dies
Meanwhile a CRPF constable who suffered injuries in militant firing died at a hospital here on Monday, taking the death toll in the attack in Lawaypora on the outskirts of Srinagar last week to three, officials said.
Constable Jagannath Ray succumbed to injuries at the SKIMS Hospital in Soura after battling for life for four days, a police official said.
He said Constable Ray was among the four CRPF personnel injured in the militant attack on Thursday.
Two personnel — a sub-inspector and a constable — had died within hours of the attack.
Police have arrested two overground workers involved in providing logistical support to the militants who carried out the attack.
