Srinagar: A Jaish-e-Muhammad militant was killed by government forces in an overnight encounter in Chrar-e-Sharif area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, officials said Tuesday.
Acting on a specific input, army’s 53 RR, special operations group (SOG) of police and CRPF laid a siege around Nowhard in Chrar-e-Sharif on Monday evening and launched a cordon and search operation, a police spokesperson said Tuesday. He said the militants hiding in the village opened fire and lobbed grenades at the search team when they were given opportunity to surrender.
In the initial exchange of gunfire, police said a solider received splinter injuries. The injured solider, he said was shifted to hospital for treatment.
The intermittent exchange of fire continued for several hours. However, the operation was halted due to the darkness yesterday, and with the first light this morning, the operation was again resumed.
“In the ensuing encounter, a militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter,” the police spokesperson said.
He identified him as JeM militant Asif Shah of Samboora area of Pulwama.
“Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe his complicity in other crimes,” the police spokesperson said.
The body of the militant, he said shall be sent to Handwara for his last rites after conducting medico-legal formalities. He said a case under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Chrar-i-Sharief and investigation has been initiated.
“People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” the police spokesperson added.
