Srinagar- Suspected militants on Thursday shot dead a BJP Sarpanch at Vessu village in Qazigund block of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
Official sources said the militants fired upon the Sarpanch identified as Sajad Ahmad Khanday near his residence at Vessu around 9:30 am , leaving him critically injured before fleeing.
Khanday was immediately rushed to a GMC Anantnag where he was declared brought dead, they said.
This is the second attack of its kind in less than 48 hours as a BJP Panch Arif Ahmad was critically wounded after militants fired upon him at Akhran Qazigund on the evening of August 4.
Meanwhile, a police spokesperson said that the Sarpanch had gone to his house from his accommodation in a secured migrant camp without informing the police.
“Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this crime. Area has been cordoned off and search is going on,” the police spokesperson added.
