TEHRAN: 16th ‘International Resistance Film Festival’ being held in the Iranian capital later this year has received around 1259 entries for various categories, organisers said on Thursday.
The 16th edition of the festival being held from November 21-27 has Kashmir and war on Covid-19 as major themes this year.
‘The Resistance International Film Festival’ is regarded as one of the most unique international film festivals in Iran. “Over last 40 years, the festival has become a highly-attended cultural phenomenon with the goal to create an atmosphere of dialogue, to foster human spirit of brotherhood and peace and also to understand the current human sufferings and to use the language of film to fight it and the oppression that causes the sufferings”, a statement from the organisers said.
“Every year the organising committee of the festival questions and explores different aspects of resistance and oppression and adds new categories to the competition program. For example, this year the definition of resistance is expanded to include invisible enemies such as viruses. A new category called “Defenders of Health” with a focus on this recent wave of resistance is assigned to show, document, and demonstrate health workers fighting the Covid-19, sacrificing their lives on the path of protecting social health”, it said.
According to the director of the Cinema Organisation of Iran, Hossein Entezami festival aims at promoting the culture of resistance in the region.
He called Iran as the ‘motherland of resistance’ and said the Resistance Festival can and must be the promoter of the culture of resistance in the region.
This year the deadline for submissions is September 26, 2020, organisers said.
“We have received 1260 submissions from filmmakers in Central and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. With 460 films, Asian filmmakers have sent the most submissions. With 248 films, Indian filmmakers are on the top of the list,” organisers said.
The festival has also received 325 films from European filmmakers. Most of the movies are from Spanish directors who have sent 30 submissions to the event.
Carefully curated program of this event has earned festival recognition from viewers and industry professionals alike. American filmmakers such as Michael Moore, Oliver Stone as well as many other artists from more than 100 different countries have participated with their documentaries and films in this festival previously.
