Srinagar: The Chinese army on Thursday released ten Indian soldiers, including four officers, hours after an army spokesperson claimed that none of the Indian troops were “missing in action” following the deadly clash in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh, the Hindu reported Friday.
According to the report, ten captive Indian soldiers, including a Lieutenant Colonel and three Majors were released by the China’s People’s Liberation Army on Thursday evening after an agreement was reached at the Major General-level talks a day earlier.
During talks on Thursday, the Indian officers were reportedly assured of the safety of soldiers. The report says that Indian delegation was also shown pictures of soldiers held captive by the Chinese.
All the soldiers were released unharmed by the PLA troops at Patrol Point 14 on Thursday at 5.30 pm, the report quotes sources as saying.
The soldiers, according to the report were taken captive after a deadly brawl broke out on the intervening night of June 14-15, leaving at least 20 Indian soldiers dead. Many Chinese soldiers were also killed in the clash increasing tensions between the two nuclear countries.
The Indian Army on Thursday said all Indian soldiers involved in the deadly clashes with the Chinese army at the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on Monday night had been “accounted for”.
“It is clarified that there are no Indian troops missing in action,” the Army had said in a brief statement without elaborating.
Following the release of the 10 Indian Army soldiers, situation has comparatively calmed down. The next round of talks between India and China over the weekend will revert to disengagement issues.
Quoting military sources, the report further says that 76 Army personnel were brutally assaulted by the Chinese army on Monday out of which 18 were seriously injured while 58 of them sustained minor injuries. They said 18 personnel are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Leh while 58 are admitted to various other hospitals.
