Srinagar: Two elderly men from twin districts of Shopian and Baramulla died at the hospitals here on Wednesday, taking the number of fatalities due to the disease in Jammu and Kashmir to 65, officials said.
65-year-old man from Feripora area of Shopian died of cardiopulmonary arrest at 4:15 am at SKIMS Hospital Soura, they said.
The officials said the patient was admitted to the hospital on Monday with complaints of fever and shortness of breath, and was diagnosed with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder.
The patient was on non-invasive ventilation and his son who was attending him had given negative consent for intubation, they added.
Another death due to coronavirus was reported from Srinagar’s SMHS hospital on Wednesday night.
70-year-old resident of Khanpora area of Baramulla died of the disease at SMHS hospital here.
Confirming it, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Dr G N Itoo said that the septuagenarian had bilateral pneumonia.
“He was admitted to SMHS hospital on June 15 and died today,” he added.
With two more fatalities, the death toll due to the pathogen has risen in Jammu and Kashmir to 65— 58 in Valley and 7 in Jammu division.
So far Srinagar district with fourteen deaths due to the virus has the highest fatalities, followed by twelve in Baramulla, eight in Kulgam, seven in Shopian, five each in Anantnag & Kupwara, four each in Budgam & Jammu, two in Pulwama while one death each has been reported in Bandipora, Doda, Rajouri & Udhampur.
Newborn Among 108 More Test Positive
Meanwhile a newborn baby, six CRPF personnel, two cops and a soldier were among 108 people who tested positive for coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir, taking the count of infected people across the Union Territory to 5406.
“108 new COVID-19 cases were detected in J&K. While 81 are from Kashmir, 27 of them are from Jammu,” the officials said.
The cases detected on Wednesday included 22 persons who had returned to Jammu and Kashmir recently.
Shopian district, in south Kashmir, had the highest number of cases at 27, followed by Srinagar & Udhampur districts at 17 cases each, Kupwara at nine , Kulgam & Baramulla at seven each, Budgam at five, Anantnag at four, Rajouri& Reasi at three each, Pulwama, Bandipora & Ramban at two each and Ganderbal & Kathua at one each, the officials said.
Among the cases from Srinagar, include a fifteen day-old baby and a teenager from Bemina and two women from Ishber and Khanyar, besides two men and women from Nowshera.
They said four districts Jammu, Doda, Kishtwar and Poonch had no fresh cases.
The officials said that 133 more patients recovered and were discharged from different hospitals.
The number of confirmed cases has now reached 5,406, out of which 4,172 are in Kashmir, while 1,234 are in Jammu, the officials said.
There are 2,428 active cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in J&K — 1,762 in Kashmir and 666 in Jammu — and 2,914 (2,353 from Kashmir and 561 from Jammu) patients have recovered, according to officials.
The J&K has witnessed 64 COVID-19 (57 from Kashmir, 7 from Jammu) deaths so far, including the one that took place on Wednesday.
