JAMMU- In what can be termed as an irresponsible and reckless behavior of J&K Police, SHO Bakshi Nagar, Jammu heckled and misbehaved with a very respected and law abiding member of society and Editor of Epilogue News Network.
Noteworthy, the same officer was involved in brutally assaulting a youth in the month of December 2019, consequent to which court had directed lodging an FIR against the officer.
The incident happened in the evening at Bakshi Nagar pulley in an area falling under the jurisdiction of Bakshi Nagar, Police station. The concerned SHO after allowing the rest of vehicles to pass at naka, stopped Tito Ganjoo, editor of Epilogue News a very reputed online portal and monthly Magazine.
Even after confirming all the credentials of editor Epilogue, the said police officer started showing a high handed attitude asking his men to detain the editor.
Tito Ganjoo was heading home after completing the assignment which was duly shared with the SHO Bakshi Nagar. However all explanations fell into the deaf ears of the said officer who not only detained but harassed Tito Ganjoo hurling choicest abuses at him and his profession.
While the vehicle of the editor was stopped the concerned officer allowed multiple vehicles to pass the naka without even bothering to stop them. The behavior of the said officer talks volumes about his arbitrary and callous attitude towards his duty. It appears the said officer intended to settle some score with the media professional through his arbitrary and errant behavior. The said officer detained the editor Epilogue for nearly one hour threatening him with grave consequences.
Intriguingly after an hour editor Epilogue was handed over a Traffic Challan mentioning the violation of not wearing a seat belt which is purely absurd considering if there was any violation of law the concerned officer should have booked the offender under relevant provisions of law which led to his detention. Merely not wearing a seat belt cannot be a reason for detention and assault.
It appears the said officer in scant regard to the law after arbitrarily and unlawfully detaining Tito Ganjoo realized his folly and used a traffic challan as a face saver to save himself from the embarrassment of his own unlawful behavior on spot.
As per reports, there seems to be a racist angle to this incident considering the concerned police officer’s reaction of highhandedness followed immediately after reading the name on the Identity proof of Tito Ganjoo.
The concerned officer without making any distinction between a respected citizen and a hardened criminal ensured the scars of the incident stay in the heart and mind of the individual who has invested his life in upholding rule of law.
Such incidents are not isolated when we look at the behaviour of few police officers across the length and breadth of Jammu and Kashmir. As far as the this particular police officer is concerned it seems he is a habitual offender.
In fact such incidents where law abiding citizens have to face the undue wrath of the department in the name of maintaining law and order are on spiral growth, presumably because of inaction over preceding incidents. It is for the top bosses of the department to look into such rising incidents and set precedence and strict guidelines for the entire department to follow.
