SRINAGAR: A civilian who was injured in firing on people trying to break the cordon laid around slain Hizb commander Riyaz Naikoo on Wednesday in Pulwama has succumbed to his injuries, reports said on Thursday.
A large number of people had tried to break the cordon laid by army and paramilitary forces around the hideout of Riyaz Naikoo in his native Beighpora village near Awantipora on Wednesday. At least 16 people had been injured in the ensuing clashes with the paramilitary and police forces, according to news reports. One of the injured Jahangir Yousuf Wani, 32, son of Mohamamd Yousuf, a resident of Uthmula, Pulwama was grievously injured as a bullet had hit him on his shoulder. According to eyewitnesses he was shifted to Pulwama hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
One report said Wani had died on the spot and the bullet had hit his neck. He is survived by two children and widow.
At least four other people suffered bullet injuries and scores others were admitted to the hospitals with pellet wounds, official sources said.
According to Medical superintendent of District Hospital Pulwama Dr Mir Mushtaq sixteen injured were received at the hospital. “Four of them had bullet wounds while remaining had received pellet injuries,” he said, adding, “All of them were shifted to Srinagar’s SMHS hospital for specialized treatment.”
Medical Superintendent SMHS hospital Dr Nazir Choudhary also confirmed that 16 persons, four of them having bullet and other pellet wounds, were received and admitted to the hospital.
Wani was buried in his ancestral graveyard after the necessary formalities were completed by the hospital authorities, a PTI report said.
Police sources have confirmed the killing. However the news took time to travel to Srinagar due to communication blockade of the area.
All mobile phone services— except government-run BSNL — were snapped on Wednesday afternoon, while the mobile internet services also remained shut.
On Wednesday, the government forces killed Hizb Operations Chief Naikoo, and his associate, Adil Bhat, in a gunfight in Beighpora.
Naikoo was one of the longest surviving militants of Hizbul Mujahideen, who took over the command of the outfit after killing of Yasin Itoo in August 2017. Naikoo and his associate were buried in Sonamarg area of Central Kashmir.
Meanwhile, police on Thursday foiled an attempt by the family of Reyaz Naikoo to erect a tent outside their home for visiting mourners.
