Srinagar: Two civilians on Tuesday were injured after government forces used tear smoke shells and fired pellets to disperse a group of people protesting the killing of two militants in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
Reports said that a group of youth hit the streets and pelted rocks at the government forces when the encounter in Maldora concluded with the killing of two unidentified militants. The government forces, news agency KNT reported, burst teargas canisters and fired pellets to disperse the stone throwing youth.
In the ding-dong battles, a youth identified as Asif Ahmad, son of Nisar Ahmad of Wacchi was injured. The youth was hit by a pellet in the left eye and shifted to Srinagar’s SMHS hospital for treatment, the report said.
However, another local news agency GNS said that a woman identified as Shahnaza Bano as also injured near the encounter site. Bano, who was hit by a bullet in her leg, was removed to the nearby hospital for treatment, the report said. However, the doctors there referred her to SMHS hospital for advanced treatment.
Pertinently, two militants were killed and an army and a cop sustained injuries in the firefight that erupted in Maldora village of the south Kashmir district this morning.
Meanwhile, panic gripped Narbal Kakpora area of Pulwama after rumors made rounds that one of the militants slain in the gunfight was a local identified as Bilal Majid Ganai. Large number of people reportedly visited his residence.
Late night reports also said that army, police and CRPF have laid a siege around Batpora village of the district and started a cordon and search operation. The door-to-door search operation was underway when the last reports came in.
