There is a dire need to guide and counsel all the school based students, literally from the young age, as we mostly witness the lack of guidance and counselling among the students in majority of the schools here in Kashmir, due to which they always face uncertainties while choosing their carriers later.
In the far off regions of Kashmir valley, the budding school kids usually face difficulties, particularly after the matriculation and 10+2 level as they suffer a lot while choosing the subjects and the streams at that time to proceed for further studies, which is the matter of grave concern.
What we observe these days is that everyone is obsessed either with Arts or with Medical streams, due to which other scoped fields get least response as compared to the mentioned streams, which usually land the majority of students in the state of uncertainty as they follow the existing trend rather than opting for other scoped fields like Marketing courses, Hotel Management, Business studies, Agriculture, Sericulture and horticulture courses, media studies, music, computer based courses, physical education and many other relevant degrees and diplomas.
By pursuing the technical courses, students may at least be able to work in private sectors to earn for their livelihood, which will ease their sufferings and mitigate the unemployment in the valley. Though, it will keep inspiring more and more youth as well.
Besides that, by conducting guidance and counselling programmes in the schools, students must be taught about their culture, languages, art and other essential things. Moreover, the focus should be laid in developing their skills too, so that they may be able to meet their needs as per their capabilities.
In most of the schools particularly in the upper reaches of Kashmir valley, it is being observed that teachers are categorically dealing with the students as they only prefer to teach properly to the students who are “competent” for them and demoralize those who are “incompetent” for them, which usually keep them (neglected students) in the state of melancholy. Such steps are literally against the ethics of teaching and every teacher must be refrained from it, to uplift the students of all the categories, without humiliating anyone as humiliation derail the students and incite a feeling of sadness among them.
Apart from all that, cultural programmes, annual days, awareness programmes, writing workshops, speech competitions, drawing competitions, and other functions, must be organised in all the schools, to give proper stages and platforms to all the desirous students, who want to learn and lead in their life.
With the help of cultural and other awareness programmes, we can find good actors, singers, artists, dancers, writers, anchors, authors and other professionals from nook and corner of valley, which will make their carrier and will also develop the culture, art and languages, especially through the theatres and other systems.
Most importantly, religious and moral education should also be imparted to the students in these institutions, to keep them optimistic and on real path, so that it may help them in maintaining peace, brotherhood, communal harmony and loyalty in each and every phase of life.
To conclude, I can say that guidance and counselling in the schools, through different modes, is the need of hour, and must be initiated/maintained in each and every school of the valley, for the betterment of students of all the capabilities.
