SRINAGAR – A shutdown was observed on Saturday in parts of Kashmir and the Kargil district of Ladakh Union territory to mourn the killing of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Commander Qasem Soleimani in a US air raid on Friday.
According to reports, Shia dominated areas of Valley observed shutdown for the second day today against the killing of Soleimani and Iraqi paramilitary commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in a brazen air strike ordered by US President Donald Trump.
All business establishments remained closed while transport was off the roads in parts of central Kashmir’s Budgam district. The shutdown was observed in main town Budgam, Magam, Sonapah, Hardhpanzu, Mirgund, Sefdan and other areas.
Sensing trouble, government forces were deployed in strength to preent any protests.
Meanwhile, a shutdown was also observed in the mountainous Kargil district, a day after hundreds of people protested Soleimani’s killing. Reports said that a mourning conference was organized by Imam Khomeni Memorial Trust in which thousands of people participated. Reports added that special prayers were held and rich tributes were paid to departed soul.
