SRINAGAR – Pre-paid mobile service and internet service of all Cellular companies, including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) remained suspended in the Kashmir valley since August 5, when centre scrapped Article 370 and 35 A, besides divided the state into two Union Territories (UTs).
Dozens of leaders of different political parties, including three former Chief Ministers—Dr Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti—ex-legislators and ex-ministers also remained under detention since August 5.
However, shops and business establishments are open and transport is plying normally on all routes in the valley, including summer capital, Srinagar.
Police said there was no restriction in any part of the valley, including Srinagar. However, the Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMF) remained deployed at sensitive places, including in the civil lines and down town to maintain law and order.
The internet service remained suspended badly hitting traders, professionals, students, doctors and media persons since August 5, when all communication network, including landlines phones, were suspended.
However, landlines were restored after about one month and post-paid mobile service after about two months. But, pre-paid mobile and internet service remained suspended despite protests by media persons and students.
People were observing spontaneous total strike against scrapping of special status of the state since August 5 for about three months. However, shops and business establishments later started functioning for four to five hours in the morning for the past one month. Now normal business activities could be witnessed throughout the day in most areas in the valley.
