SRINAGAR – In a significant development, Ladakh Union Territory (UT) will soon have its separate police wing to be known as Leh police that will be headed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ladakh.
Centre has decided to ensure that the Ladakh UT gets its separate police wing that will be known as Leh Police. “There will be policemen from Leh and Kargil region in the police wing of Leh and if the need arises, more men will be deployed as per the need and requirement of policing in the newly constituted UT,” said a senior police officer wishing not to be named.
He said Leh Police wing will be formed under the set rules of J&K Re-Organisation Act 2019 as the Ladakh is officially now a UT carved out of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State. Ladakh was officially declared UT on October 31 with R K Mathur as its first Lieutenant Governor and SS Khandare as its first Inspector General of Police (IGP). Ladah was given a separate divisional status in February 2019.
Another police officer said that there will be mass police recruitment drives in Leh and Kargil from January onwards in a bid to ensure that the police wing is strengthened in number. “The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is set to issue separate police grants for Leh to strengthen the local police there on the lines of J&K police. The police wing of UT will be headed by IGP Leh who will be given adequate powers to set the ball rolling,” the official, privy to the development said.
To begin with, the official said that the Leh UT will IGP Leh’s office will act as the primary headquarter while as land will be identified for setup up full-fledged police headquarters in Leh in March-April. “In future, there will be a separate women police wing in Leh as well,” the officer said.
He said that there is a likelihood that IGP will be given all the powers to run police affairs in Leh while as there will be no DGP for Leh like the J&K UT. “The IGP Leh may be known as Police Commissioner Leh or otherwise enjoy the same rank,” the officer said.
