SRINAGAR – After witnessing coldest night of the winter so far, people in the Kashmir valley, including summer capital of the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, had a sigh of relief on Monday morning when sun came out though the intensity of the heat was low.
However, the Leh in Ladakh region was coldest with minus 14.4 degree minimum temperature.
Open sky due to dry weather predicted for the next six days by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Srinagar, the night temperature will drop further while the day temperature will be near or above normal.
This is not something new such a temperature was witnessed in the valley in the past also when mercury dips during night due to early snow and icy cold winds, a Met department spokesman said.
The Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, witnessed moderate to heavy snowfall in the month of November this year, resulting in early chill. Due to accumulation of snow on the upper reaches in the Kashmir valley besides hills surrounding Srinagar, cold breeze continued, forcing people to wear woollen and warm cloths.
A spokesman of the IMD said that Srinagar recorded coldest night of the season after the minimum temperature witnessed a drop and settled at minus 2.5 degree, which was minus 1.6 degree below normal.
Due to prediction for clear sky during the next 6 days, the night temperature will drop further, he said.
However, day temperature will be near or above normal though the intensity of the sun heat will be low.
He said the sky would be mainly clear to partly cloudy and the maximum temperature would be around 13 degree, slightly above normal and minimum minus 3, about two notches below normal in Srinagar.
Gulmarg, the world famous ski resort in north Kashmir was coldest at minus 7 degree minimum temperature followed by famed health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir at minus 5 degree and Kupwara minus 3.7 degree.
He said the sky would be mainly clear to partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 2 degree and minus 11 degree respectively in Leh during the next 24 hours.
